A key element of occupational safety and health
The risk assessment is the key element of occupational safety and health (OSH). It provides a basis for the systematic and effective management of health and safety. Our English website on risk assessment is intended to serve as an introduction and overview. It also explains the structure of BAuA's information services on risk assessment. The full range of information is only available on our German website

Since 1996, the Safety and Health at Work Act obligates all employers to implement the necessary measures to protect their employees according to the assessment and evaluation of the working conditions and the associated hazards.
The handbook on risk assessment, edited by Kittelmann, Adolph, Michel, Packroff, Schütte and Sommer (2021), is a reference work for OSH professionals. It provides basic information on the implementation of risk assessment. The general information and criteria in this handbook cannot be used for the deduction of appropriate results of a risk assessment; Company- and situation-specific aspects must always be taken into account.
The handbook is divided into three parts:
Part 1 contains general information and recommendations on how to proceed with risk assessment.
Part 2 contains risk factor-related knowledge, in particular on the relevance of the respective hazard and its effects, investigation and assessment bases, occupational safety and health measures, existing regulations and scientific findings.
Part 3 contains a database with practical guidelines for risk assessment.
The handbook replaces the "Guide to risk assessment" previously published by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA).
This part provides general information on the implementation of risk assessment.
In this part you find information on the following risk factors:
This part contains a database with practical guidelines for risk assessment.
