Identifying Mental Workload in Professional Life and Designing Work Human-Related

(in German)

Employees today collaborate in teams, develop ideas, and solve problems. Many of them utilise digital media to work flexibly from a variety of locations. They operate machines and support and train their colleagues. Additionally, interactive and emotional work are becoming more significant in many occupations. Meanwhile, certain digital media are increasingly affecting working life. Constant reachability, the greater amounts of information that are available, and accelerated communication and production processes are changing the mental workload people exposed to in their jobs. Although it is being discussed a great deal by the media, policymakers, and academics, a disparate range of approaches are being taken to this topic in the world of work, and the terminology used is inconsistent.

This brochure therefore serves to clarify key concepts and explain the relations between mental workload, mental strain, and their consequences. It is intended to raise organisations and employees' awareness of mental workload as an issue and gives advice on a health promoting design of work.

The brochure is aimed at practitioners in the world of work responsible for matters such as the design of processes and work tasks. It provides information for employees, employers, planners, developers, system and equipment designers, product designers, occupational safety and health specialists, company doctors, members of works and staff councils, and managers about how to improve occupational safety and health in the workplace.
