Employers are required by the German Occupational Safety and Health Act (Arbeitsschutzgesetz, ArbSchG) to design work in ways that prevent risks to life and health and keep any residual risk as minimal as possible. Psychosocial risks at work also have to be taken into consideration. But when should mental workload be regarded as posing a risk? How should and can work be designed to mitigate such risks as far as possible? What design challenges are faced and what important factors contribute to successful outcomes? The specialist book compiled in the course of this project conveys well-founded knowledge about
- the psychosocial risks at work, as well as design requirements and options for the prevention of risks,
- occupational safety and health (OSH) requirements in the light of relevant OSH legislation, rules, and regulations,
- design options for preventive work design,
- factors that help organisations successfully manage psychosocial risks at work,
- practical recommendations for the successful implementation of preventive work design.
Experts from various specialised units within the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz and Arbeitsmedizin, BAuA) have contributed to this BAuA specialist book, that reflects the (significant) changes towards the current state of the art in the field of mental workload and the management of psychosocial risks in the workplace. Following on from the BAuA specialist book Psychosocial Risk Assessment in the Workplace - Experience and Recommendations, also published by ESV-Verlag in 2014, it is intended for personnel who are responsible for and take decisions about work design and occupational safety and health, as well as OSH service providers.
