Easy-to-use Workplace Control Scheme for Hazardous Substances (EMKG)

For risk assessments according to the Hazardous Substances Ordinance

The EMKG (in German Einfaches Maßnahmenkonzept Gefahrstoffe) supports you with the risk assessment when dealing with hazardous substances and suggests appropriate measures. It applies to people involved in occupational safety and health, especially those responsible in small and medium-sized companies.

The EMKG takes into account all risks listed in the Hazardous Substances Ordinance. These include direct contact with hazardous substances - for example by inhalation or skin contact - as well as fire and explosion hazards.

Rapid determination of measures

By combining easily accessible parameters from safety data sheets and site inspections, the EMKG enables the quick and precise determination of an appropriate control strategy level for every risk. Intolerable health risks are revealed and appropriate recommendations for action are given.

The EMKG offers control guidance sheets for each control strategy level as a two-page check list to support the implementation of measures.

Which control strategy levels are available?

The EMKG consists of three control strategy levels.

  • Control strategy level 1:
Control strategy level 1 includes minimum standards for the workplace. These organisational and hygiene measures have to be implemented at all times.
  • Control strategy level 2:
Control strategy level 2 describes emission-reducing measures that minimise the release of hazardous substances for typical work processes, e.g. weighing, filling and transferring, emptying, mixing, coating and laminating.
  • Control strategy level 3:
Control strategy level 3 describes solutions for closed systems.
  • Expert advice:

Particularly high hazards require a closed system or expert advice.

As an EMKG user you will find general information on the EMKG as well as numerous working aids here. They enable you to apply suitable occupational safety measures in your company quickly and precisely.
