13th Symposium "Light and Health"
(in German)
In February 2026, the 13th "Light and Health” symposium was held, organized by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin and co-sponsored by the German Society for lighting technology and lighting design (LiTG). The event once again highlighted the diverse effects of light and optical radiation - from visible light to UV and IR radiation - on the human organism. Both health-promoting effects and potential risks were discussed.
The contributions in this conference proceedings address various aspects related to visual and non-visual effects of light, new findings on protection against hazards from optical radiation including the topic of blue light hazard as well as opportunities and challenges associated with modern artificial light sources. The effects of changing solar UV radiation and heat exposure as a result of climate change were also addressed.
The aim of the symposium was to present scientific findings in a practical manner and to strengthen interdisciplinary exchange. Experts from fields such as photo- and chronobiology, (occupational) medicine, ophthalmology, biophysics, photodermatology, psychology, and ergonomics came together with representatives from the fields of lighting industry, lighting design, practical use, and occupational safety.
