Overview of current assessment approaches and possible procedures for aggregated workplace exposure assessments

Aggregate exposure has been defined by US-EPA as exposure to a single chemical by multiple pathways and routes of exposure. It is indisputable that it must be considered from a chemical safety perspective. Aggregate exposure assessments therefore have found their way into European chemicals legislation.

But there is currently no good overview of how aggregated exposure assessments for workers are conducted by different stakeholders and in the different jurisdictions, how realistic they are, what tools are available for workplace aggregated exposure assessment and even what exactly is understood by the term "aggregated exposure assessment".

Based on comprehensive literature and internet search, evaluation of selected registration or evaluation documents under diverse legislation, and on discussions with experts from multiple fields this search aims to provide an overview of current scientific and regulatory approaches to aggregate exposure assessment for workers.

The overview includes the identification of requirements and scope of workplace aggregate exposure assessments from different regulatory areas in the EU and the USA. The current state of workplace aggregated exposure assessment is illustrated by an evaluation of selected chemical assessment reports from chemicals, biocides, and pesticides legislation. Tools and models that allow for aggregate exposure assessment are presented.
