Long Working Hours and Earnings in Germany
(in German)
This article examines which employees work long hours of more than 41 hours per week, how much these employees earn, and how their lower earnings compared to employees working normal full-time hours can be explained. According to the 2018 Structure of Earnings Survey, around five percent of employees have long paid working hours. On average, they work around three paid overtime hours per week. Men with medium qualifications and in certain occupational groups, such as motor vehicle drivers and agricultural workers, are disproportionately affected by long paid working hours. Employees with long working hours have hourly wages that are 18 percent lower and monthly earnings that are 5 percent lower than employees working normal full-time hours. This can be explained to a large extent, but not entirely, by their occupations, their position in the workplace, and their vocational training.
