Course Concept for the Training of Leaders in Organisational Restructuring Processes

How can leaders manage change and restructuring processes successfully and healthily? The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin, BAuA) has developed a manual for a training course intended to help leaders cope with the challenges posed by restructuring and change processes in their teams, departments, and work groups. The manual is aimed at multipliers working in business consultancy, personnel development, and workplace health management who wish to deliver the course for leaders within their own organisations or for their clients.

The objective of the course is not only to strengthen leaders’ performance as “change agents” in their work groups, but also to give them a better appreciation of the significance of self-care and health prevention. It devotes particular attention to the balance between the demands of the workplace and the promotion of individual well-being. The course concept has been trialled and further developed in various organisations over the last few years.

It consists of practically oriented modules that, apart from the administrative aspects of change processes, also address in particular the impacts felt at the individual level by leaders and their staff - for instance, due to uncertainty, work intensification, or cutbacks to resources. Five different modules deal with central topics such as the opportunities and risks of restructuring processes, triggers that induce stress, healthy leadership styles for change processes, and the development of individual action plans for the participating leaders’ teams and organisations. The manual gives course tutors (e.g. consultants) detailed instructions on how to run the sessions and offers valuable materials that can be used to integrate the subject matter covered sustainably into a company or institution’s organisational culture.
