Focus on shift work: high demands and health risks

Shift work means working at varying or atypical times, such as in the evening or at night. This can pose health risks and interfere with private life. Based on the 2024 BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey, this fact sheet compares the environmental, physical and psychological working conditions of employees with and without shift work. The results show that, in addition to demanding working hours, employees who work shifts are often exposed to other unfavorable working conditions. These conditions are also reflected in poorer health outcomes.
