Physical work demands are less common today than in the past. Nevertheless, physically demanding activities still exist. How often do employees in Germany report physical demands over time? How many of them find them stressful, and how many suffer from musculoskeletal complaints? Data from more than 17,000 respondents in each of the last four BIBB/BAuA Employment Surveys (2006-2024) show that physical work demands have declined. However, heavy lifting and carrying are perceived by many as burdensome.
