Three years of Science in Dialogue: Perspectives on hybrid, location-flexible and multi-local working

(in German)

Mobile working, especially working from home, is an integral part of today's world of work. Despite some initiatives to return to office-based working, hybrid models dominate in Germany: office work combined with one or two days of working from home. It is therefore important to organise this form of work in a healthy and safe way. In an effort to pool the latest research findings, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) launched the format 'Hybrid, location-flexible, multi-local working? Science in dialogue'.

In cooperation with the EU-OSHA focus on 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age', five two-day workshops were held between 2023 and 2025, at which experts from various disciplines presented and discussed their research. The research and discussion contributions were published as BAuA Focus articles. This material was evaluated using qualitative content analysis. The aim of this article is to systematise the current research topics and perspectives on hybrid, remote and multi-local work discussed in the dialogues and to highlight research gaps and challenges from the perspective of (inter-company) occupational safety and health.

Practical Relevance: Research into hybrid forms of work enables an evidence-based assessment of the effects of changing work locations on stress, ergonomics, technology, leadership and communication in distributed teams - an important contribution to the further development of organisational occupational health and safety.
