The German Committee on Hazardous Substances (AGS) has adopted the revised version of the Technical Rule for Hazardous Substances (TRGS) 402 "Identification and assessment of the risks from activities involving hazardous substances: inhalation exposure". This TRGS was published in September 2023. It contains a number of changes in comparison to the previous version. Particularly noteworthy is the standardisation of the establishment of a finding, which now considers both substances with health-based occupational exposure limit values and risk-based assessment criteria according to exposure-risk relationships (ERR). The classification of substances, which may be determined in workplace air, and selection and application of suitable measuring or non-measuring identification methods have been updated. Furthermore, the list of recommended measuring procedures of the AGS was implemented. This publication gives explanatory notes for the application of this TRGS in exposure identification and assessment.
