Digital transformation and the work situation of basic employees: an analysis of the role of information and communication technologies

(in German)

This article examines the work situation, particularly the work demands and resources, of low-skilled workers. We distinguish between those who always or frequently use information and communication technologies (ICT) in their daily work and those who do not or do so less frequently. The study is based on the survey "Digitization and Change in Employment 2019" (DiWaBe), a representative survey of employees in the manufacturing and service sectors in Germany that focuses on the topic of digitization. We apply linear regression models to examine correlations associated with ICT use. The results suggest that there are significant differences in the job demands and resources of low-skilled workers with and without (frequent) ICT use. In low-skilled work, psychological demands become more important, while physical demands remain equally important. This should be taken into account when designing healthy and safe work for low-skilled workers
