- Project number: F 2536
- Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
- Status: Ongoing Project
- Planned end: 2025-01-31
Description:
Working environments are becoming increasingly complex due to digitalisation and the interconnection of work equipment. This makes it more difficult to assess occupational safety and health (OSH) risks. Furthermore, risk assessment is often heavily influenced by OSH experts‘ subjective experiences. The suitability of artificial intelligence (AI) methods is now to be investigated with a feasibility study in order to help workplace occupational safety and health professionals conduct reliable, comparable risk assessments.
At the outset, the data available for risk analysis in a selected company with an established OSH process will be compiled to set an exemplary benchmark. In parallel, OSH experts in small and medium-sized enterprises with simpler occupational safety and health structures will be surveyed to learn about their requirements of risk analyses. Suitable algorithms and procedures will subsequently be identified, and the most promising approach trialled in practice. Both the methodology’s performance and its acceptance and practicality will be examined during these trials.
The primary objective is to strengthen occupational safety and health in the workplace by ensuring AI-based support tools are available in future. The project will therefore also consider whether the results reached are applicable in related fields and how they could be utilised by other actors such as labour inspection institutions.
