Measures for control guidance sheets (MapS)

  • Project number: F 2440
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

The easy-to-use workplace control scheme for hazardous substances (EMKG) is a tool for determining protective measures in risk assessments. Companies are provided with practical control guidance sheets that are continuously updated and further developed.

The EMKG consists of four control strategy levels – from simple protective measures to complex technical and organisational solutions – which are applied depending on the hazard. In this project, the control guidance sheets for control strategy level 2 were revised. The aim is to provide even better support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The revision was based on literature research and 22 site visits to 14 companies.

As a result, the EMKG control guidance sheets for the modules Skin, Eyes, Inhalation, Fire & Explosion, and Storage have been standardised and, with their new structure, help to select measures that build on each other.

The number of available control guidance sheets has been increased from 28 to 48. All control guidance sheets are now standardised, clearly laid out, and streamlined. Repetitions have been reduced and content is better linked through references. The control guidance sheets can now also be used interactively: with checkboxes, comment fields, and the option to add your own requirements.

The revised control guidance sheets have thus been further developed into a practical working and documentation tool – tailored to the needs of users in the workplace.
