Market Research on ICT-based applications for implementing occupational health and safety ("E-occupational health and safety") in German language

Publikation_Sprache_Deutsch

Due to the developments in information and communication technology (ICT), more and more digital technologies are being used in the field of occupational health and safety. The aim of this project is to create a basis to assess opportunities and potential of digital technologies in the organization of occupational safety and health.

This report provides an overview of the ICT-based applications available on the German speaking market providing organizational regulations for occupational health and safety. The market research is based on three sources of information: an internet query carried out in the period from 06.01.2020 to 15.04.2020, specialist information from "A + A 2019" conference, and semi-structured interviews with three providers of occupational telemedicine and with 18 users of ICT-based applications carried out in March / April 2020.

As a result of the market research, 245 products (including 202 involving ICT) from 91 suppliers, have been identified on the German language market, and they have been evaluated according to 63 criteria. Management systems, and tools for organizing and carrying out instructions, and tools for risk assessments make up the largest share of the products identified, followed by occupational telemedicine. These products mainly implement transaction and interaction (as for occupational telemedicine) as forms of application. Software developers make up the majority of the product's provider. Products offered by occupational safety institutions are free of charge and branch specific. 80 of the ICT-based products represent specific solutions that cover exactly one element of occupational health and safety, 4 products cover all relevant elements.

Users interviewed confirm that the organization and implementation of occupational health and safety is facilitated by using ICT-based applications. Still, they see potential for improvement mainly in the comprehensibility / applicability of risk assessment tools and in the potential of integrating management tools for occupational health and safety with each other and with other management tools. Suppliers of occupational telemedicine consider an Internet supply with adequate band width as a basic requirement for the further expansion of any tele-applications.
