Feasibility study for BIM-based planning supports for working places

The planning of well-designed, safe and healthy working places plays an important role in compliance with workplace law. It is not uncommon to find out that the requirements of workplace law are disregarded. The reasons for this are often vague or changing planning objectives, ignorance, missing information among planners, uncoordinated planning changes, poorly implemented plan review processes and a lack of acceptance procedures. This is where the idea of BIM-based planning supports for working places comes in.

The progressive digitization of the planning and execution of construction works creates the basis for a digital twin of the states of structural systems and processes. With the help of this data, it will be increasingly possible to generate new knowledge through this computer-aided evaluation. The associated potential can be used for new services and supporting assistance systems, e.g. in the context of the BIM-based planning supports for working places as issued here.

As part of the investigations, the basic need for supporting assistance systems could be confirmed and substantiated. Furthermore, it was possible to identify further need for action, as well as significant fields of action to improve the aforementioned deficits. Specifically, taking into account different user perspectives, three main areas of application were identified:

  • information, education and practical supply of knowledge,
  • (partially) automated support through advisory and testing assistance systems during the planning phase and
  • (partially) automated proofing of digital planning documents (BIM-model) for workplace law issues.

Specific isolated solutions of methodically comparable planning supports show the basic feasibility of this idea. The requirement for the implementation of BIM-based planning supports is the most complete possible translation of the workplace law requirements into numerically processible data structures. In the feasibility study, specific requirements and recommended actions are given, which lead to the implementation of the aforementioned planning supports. Finally possible application scenarios are demonstrated in the feasibility study.
