Work and health protection in facilities of day care

(in German)

The project "Work and health protection in facilities of day care" (F 2224) was funded by the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Its goals were the generation of results on the level of work situation, physical and psychological stressors in nursing as well as suggestions for improving the situation. In particular the terms of day care for elderly and for psychiatric patients were focused on. At first results from the day care for elderly are reported, taken from expert interviews, participatory observations and questioning of users and non-users related to offer, demand and development. The main focus is on the results of a survey conducted in 80 day care facilities for the elderly in the German states of Bavaria and Saxony. In sum 307 nurses assessed their working conditions, measured with the screening instrument "TAA - Teilstationäre Pflege", which was developed in the project, and health. In summary the level of strain in the analysed facilities is moderate. Findings related to psychological and physical health are mostly well. In regard to the contact with guests it can be seen that nurses interact very often and long. Possibilities for a health-promoting work design are discussed.

A total of 33 psychiatric day hospitals (Bavaria: 7, Saxony: 26) are included in the analysis. In the investigation a total of 91 employees of psychiatric day hospitals (Bavaria: 14, Saxony: 77) took part. The investigation shows that the nurses in psychiatric day care hospitals experience their work as well designed. The nurses reported low work load, they show a good general health and complaints in the musculoskeletal system, which correspond with the total German population.
