The measurement of incoherent optical radiation in exposed workplaces is necessary in order to carry out a complete risk assessment under the German Safety and Health at Work Act (Arbeitsschutzgesetz, ArbSchG). This guidance document describes the steps that have to be taken, as well as providing further information. Risks from coherent optical radiation (lasers) are not covered by the guidance document.
The brochure explains which physical variables are required for calculating exposure limits. Furthermore, it describes the criteria used to select suitable measurement procedures, and how the maximum permitted duration of exposure is to be calculated from the results of the measurements. The conditions under which measurements are taken and their results must be set out for the risk assessment of affected workplaces. The documentation of measurements is also discussed. This guidance document is intended for occupational safety specialists, company safety officers, industrial inspectorates, and employers' liability insurance associations.
