Determination of the inhalative exposure to biological agents during the commercial use of gardening devices

  • Project number: F 2486
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Ongoing Project
  • Planned end: 2025-06-30

Description:

Motor-powered lawn and garden equipment is being commercially used for the maintenance of garden and recreational areas on a regular basis. The equipment used for this task comprises lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chainsaws and trimmers. During the operation of this equipment, several hazardous substances as well as biological material can become airborne and pose a threat for the employees.

Workplace measurements for the determination of workers' exposure to hazardous substances and biological agents will be conducted in approximately 15 gardening companies. Within the measurements, the exposure to contaminants like airborne particles, engine exhaust, as well as bacteria and fungi will be determined. Based on the results of the measurement campaigns, control guidance sheets as well as instructions for good work practice will be written.
