Work intensity/time and performance pressure in the tertiary sector - developmental context and design possibilities within the work organization

  • Project number: F 2285
  • Institution: Chemnitz University of Technology / ISF München, Institut für Sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung e.V. / Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

Time and performance pressure are considered to be essential stress factors in today's working environment. They appear to increase in connection with new forms of work organisation and management. Important keywords in this context are the use of information and communication technology and associated high levels of work complexity / work interruptions / multitasking, intensified teamwork, increasing employee self management, growing demands for documentation and controlling, flexibility of work and blurring of boundaries between work and leisure.

We still know little about how time and performance pressure arise under different influencing factors at the workplace and how conditions within the company as well as individual patterns of behaviour and attitudes interact. Another important question is how approaches to promote efficient and healthy working might look like.

The aim of the project is to gain new insights about the occurrence and origin of time and performance pressure, in particular in the growing tertiary sector (with a focus on intellectual work) that has been rather neglected in the research so far. On this basis, design options (concerning work organisation, organisational culture and employee behaviour) to promote efficient and low stress work will be derived. As a result, the project can add empirically supported knowledge to the scientific debate on the development of stress and the assessment of psychological stress/strain. At the same time, design approaches for subsequent intervention studies can be developed.
