Description:

According to § 12 j of the German Chemical Act, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) is the Authorisation unit for biocidal products. Within this function, the BAuA is also responsible for the evaluation of the efficacy of biocidal products. In case special expertise is available in the respective institution, the authorisation unit could ask the other authorities for expert statements on the efficacy evaluation. Such expertise is not available for disinfectants to a sufficient extent. Additionally, there is a deficit concerning harmonized methods and testing strategies on EU-level for disinfectants. Additionally, the set of criteria necessary to evaluate efficacy studies is missing. The knowledge which is available in the other institutions in each case is limited to a special area (e.g. testing methods, knowledge about the use of the respective disinfectant, biocides procedure); this has to be combined and completed.

The results of the project should be used in order to perform a scientifically sound efficacy evaluation. Only disinfectants which are sufficiently effective against all relevant target organisms in the respective use area ensure the safety of food and the protection against (animal) diseases.
