Description:
Assessing wood preservatives under the biocidal product directive 98/8/EC it was found that among inhalative exposure dermal exposure of workers could occur. In the ongoing evaluation process it is obvious that the dermal pathway for different product types is a relevant source of exposure and sometimes the main source. The dermal exposure assessment is based on a few data collected in the TNsG Human Exposure to Biocidal Products. Therefore the measurement and evaluation of dermal exposure is essential for the authorisation of biocidal products. These experiences are supported by results of the BAuA project F 1809 "Workplace exposure from the use of biocidal products - Part 4: wood preservatives". This study determined inhalative and dermal exposure of workers handling wood preservatives in vacuum pressure processes with copper chromium compounds or thermal impregnation with creosote. For the planed project the different measurement methods should be collected and the applicability should be checked. Also measurements in a simulation test stand are required. The applicability of the measurement method(s) should be determined during the industrial application of wood preservatives. During the measurement at workplaces the exposure determinants should be documented. An applicable protocol of analytical methods with the measuring parameters should be available. For the applicable measurement method the parameters storage stability, reproducibility etc. should be documented. During the measurement at workplaces it is possible that the analytical laboratory of BAuA determined the inhalative exposure.
