Scientific Management

Research and development (R&D) projects handled in Division 4 or awarded to external parties through tendering processes lay the scientific foundation for statutory tasks relating to chemical safety and for providing advice on hazardous substances and biological agents to politicians and industry. Scientific Management acts as a specialist department to support project applications in internal and external application procedures (projects with third-party funding) and bundles individual questions into interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary project designs and thematic focuses. Operating at the interface between science and politics, it undertakes the coordination and communication of focal topics and project results.

Our specialist duties are as follows:

  • contributing to the strategic orientation and implementation of the research and development strategy;
  • quality assurance for R&D activities in the division;
  • coordinating R&D focuses across multiple divisions and units;
  • observing national, European and international developments (acting as the "eyes and ears");
  • establishing partnerships, coordinating collaborations with universities and research institutions, and acquiring projects with third-party funding;
  • quality assurance for the division's publications;
  • representing the division externally in scientific matters;
  • representing the divisional management;
  • overall responsibility for research and development activities with a view to supporting the statutory tasks, policy advice and transfer of practical knowledge relating to chemical safety, especially nanomaterials and innovative materials, and to simplifying the way measures are communicated in the chemicals supply chain through control banding approaches.
