Locomotion

(in German)

"Locomotion" is a form of workload to which employees are subject when they move to a work location or around a work area. It is assessed without reference to whether raised levels of action forces are being exerted, and may or may not involve carrying some kind of load. This form of workload can be divided into the following types:

  • Unaided locomotion (e.g. walking, climbing, crawling)
  • Aided locomotion (e.g. using muscular force to move a vehicle)

The level of strain caused by locomotion and therefore the probability of excessive strain being suffered are dependent on the nature, intensity, and conditions of the workload and the employee’s personal attributes.

This baua: Guidance on "Locomotion" explains how a risk assessment can be conducted using the multilevel Key Indicator Methods Inventory. It has been drawn up to assist workplace actors such as managers, work designers, employee representative bodies, safety and health specialists, and occupational physicians. It will consequently help ensure hazards attributable to locomotion can be identified and workplaces designed appropriately, so allowing cardiovascular conditions and musculoskeletal disorders to be prevented.
