4E-cognition in exhibitions

  • Project number: F 2598
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Ongoing Project
  • Planned end: 2028-10-31

Description:

The research project examines how theoretical approaches in cognitive science can enhance the design and impact of exhibitions. The goal is to optimize visitors’ learning experiences and further develop the DASA as a site for education. The project focuses particularly on the 4E cognition model, which conceptualizes informal learning processes as embodied (rooted in physical experiences), embedded (situated in social, cultural and spatial contexts), enacted (supported through action), and extended (augmented by tools).

The research is conducted in two phases: In the first phase, the 4E-cognition based development of the planned temporary exhibition on the topic of “Sleep” will be scientifically accompanied: through a close theory -practice interaction between research and exhibition team, theoretical insights will inform content concept and design while practical issues are incorporated into the research at an early stage. In the second phase, visitors’ interactions with the exhibition will be examined.

The project employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to assess and evaluate the application and impact of the 4E cognition model both during the exhibition development process and the visitor experience.

The project aims to establish DASA’s exhibition concepts on a cognitive science foundation and enhance their effectiveness. Additionally, a practical guide will be developed to assist exhibition teams in applying cognitive science insights. This project contributes to advancing exhibition practices and strengthens DASA’s role as an innovative site for learning and education.

Cooperation partners of this project are Prof. Dr. Doris Lewalter and Dr. Stephanie Moser from TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology: Professorship for Formal and Informal Learning and Prof. Dr. Stephan Schwan from the Leibnitz Institute for Knowledge Media in Tübingen.
