European chemicals legislation aims to provide the best possible protection for human health and the environment when working with chemicals. The regulation of chemical substances, mixtures and products is based on the conduction of a reliable risk assessment. This includes estimating the levels of exposure with regard to the safe handling of chemicals in the workplace. Such a risk assessment requires information on, for example, the form of exposure (e.g. contact with skin or by inhalation) and the level and duration of the exposure.

The risk assessment is carried out by the industry. These assessments are then reviewed and corrected by ECHA and further responsible authorities if necessary.

In many cases, the exposure assessment requires the use of models, as data on exposure at the workplace (workplace measurements) are frequently unavailable. With the EMKG-Expo-Tool and SprayExpo, BAuA currently offers two model applications for inhalative exposure assessments at the workplace.

The practical use of these exposure models as well as validation and comparative studies that have been completed in recent years have all led to the conclusion that there is a need for further development of the available models. The key factors include, for example, a more user-friendly and transparent design of the tools, as well as the addition of a module that considers dermal exposure. Experience from other BAuA research projects (for example, F 2303 [ETEAM], F 2349 [SysDEA]) provides important insights for the improvement of the models.

The objective of the research project is to develop a user-friendly toolbox, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, which covers the assessment of both inhalative and dermal exposure. In this context, the existing BAuA tools are examined and improved based on the current scientific findings.
