  • Project number: F 2341
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

Filament bulbs are more and more substituted by energy saving lamps in the European Community. These lamps are containing mercury. The mercury content has been decreased during the last years. Furthermore, mercury containing illuminants have been have been used for background lighting of flat screens, such as for TVs and PC monitors. These illuminants are recycled at the end of their utilisation phase. Especially, municipal collecting points are collecting these discarded illuminants.

The investigation program is aimed at determining inhalative and inner mercury exposure of the workers in such municipal collecting points. Therefore, comprehensive workplace measurements and biomonitoring are performed, respectively. The results of these investigations are used for the development of standardised working procedures to support employers in their legal duties for risk management.
