Work Design

Healthy, human-centred work stands and falls with the concrete ways work is designed on site. This is why the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz and Arbeitsmedizin, BAuA) undertakes research into a multitude of issues relating to the design of work: from plant safety to time and location-flexible working.

It is not just megatrends like digitalisation, artificial intelligence, flexibilisation, and climate change that are transforming our world of work.

The continuing advances of automation, the changing requirements services are expected to meet, and evolving forms of human-human and human-machine interaction are also creating new challenges for OSH professionals. Meanwhile the classic forms of work are by no means disappearing - although their parameters are changing, so that research and improvements will continue to be needed in these areas as well.

Above all, our research therefore explores the new challenges posed by flexible working time, home office arrangements, artificial intelligence, and climate change without losing sight of traditional OSH issues such as workplaces, plant safety, or personal protective equipment. Many of our scientific findings are summarised in the Handbook on Risk Assessment (Handbuch Gefährdungsbeurteilung), which OSH specialists can consult for fundamental information about the performance of risk assessments in their organisations.
