Work and Occupational Health in the Area of inpatient and outpatient Care

Inpatient and outpatient care is one of the most important areas of healthcare. In Germany, over 1.5 million people work in this field – considerably more than in the automotive industry.

In the management of the current demographic developments, professional care plays a key role. In both the present and the future, more and more well educated, hard working employees are required. Working conditions which support both health and learning are a key requirement in this respect.

In the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the sector-specific factors relating to occupational safety and health in the area of care are addressed by unit 3.6 "Workplace interventions and transfer". A variety of events and publications provide information about current topics. The target groups include management teams in organisations and companies from the area of care, care managers, managers of care services and care homes, carers from a variety of areas, as well as professionals in the area of occupational safety and health (for example, specialists for occupational safety, company doctors).

The current focal points of the work include ward organisation, health and safety of trainees and digitalisation in the area of care. These topics are covered mainly by the New Quality of Work Initiative (INQA) – particularly by the "Healthy Care" network (Offensive Gesund Pflegen) – and in transfer projects and regional events.

In research and development, the implementation of measures for the improvement of the health and safety of professional carers will be the main focus in the future. The measures that care homes take to provide a safe and healthy workplace, how these measures are implemented and whether these measures are successful will be the areas of research.
