Digital Ergonomics

Principles, methods and goals

The design of products and work systems can be optimised using digital ergonomics. Thanks to virtual simulation, design deficits are recognised early and thus avoided in the actual implementation.

Digital ergonomics is understood as an umbrella term for digital models and methods for planning, realisation and ongoing improvement of products and socio-technical work systems. Digital ergonomics focus on the individual. He or she is the reference point for the designing safe, healthy and usable products or systems.

Principles of digital ergonomics

The fundamental principles of digital ergonomics are

  • Anthropometry, which deals with the dimensions of the human body and their exact recording
  • Biomechanics, which focuses on motion sequences in biological systems and the functions of biological musculoskeletal systems
  • Cognitive psychology, which is dedicated to the cognitive processing operations of humans, i.e. how we perceive and evaluate things, how we learn, recognise, com-pare, consider, solve problems, make decisions, etc.

By means of these scientific disciplines, a correct virtual depiction and simulation is possible using digital manikins. Beside the measuring, modern processing and visualisation of anthropo-metric data, the possibilities for the virtual planning of individualised work in a production and service context are also examined in this field of action.

Goals of digital ergonomics

The inherent goals of this field of action include:

  • Updating and processing anthropometric data for Germany
  • Research into the possibilities of virtual simulation of physical aspects of human work
  • Clarification of simulation possibilities of cognitive functions, for example in the field of artificial intelligence
