Work and Health

Well-designed work for healthy workers

Well-designed work can have a positive effect on health. Besides avoiding exposure to noise, heat, dust and heavy lifting, it also takes account of workers' mental health.

Research into healthy working conditions by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aims to identify which factors play a key role in workers' physical/mental health and performance. The stress and demands of the modern working environment often have a contradictory effect on humans. For example, the effects that new technologies have on humans cannot always be clearly identified. In some cases, there are interdependencies with other factors, such as diet and exercise.

BAuA therefore addresses not only the question of direct harm due to work-related factors, but also major "public health problems" such as musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular diseases and mental impairments due to work. The aim is to understand the interrelations between work-related factors and other possible causes of these diseases.

In addition, BAuA explores approaches to Disability Management and Workplace Integration and the return-to-work programme in order to provide early and lasting support to workers returning to work, enabling them to enjoy continued occupational participation on a lasting basis.
