BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey 2006

Working conditions and health from the employees' perspective

The survey focuses on questions related to the workplace (areas of activity, work requirements, workloads, etc.) and to stress and health impairments. In addition, links between education/further training and employment in the broader sense are analysed.

Compared to other studies, the survey stands out thanks to the fact that, on the one hand, it provides a representative sample of the labour force and, on the other hand, the simultaneous collection of data regarding both stress and health problems in one survey, can reflect connections between stresses and physical impairments.

Who was interviewed and how?

In the context of the employment survey, 20,000 employed persons aged 15 and over with a working time of at least ten hours per week were interviewed in Germany, where employment meant an remunerated activity. In this case volunteers were excluded as well as persons in an employment relationship within the framework of the first vocational training. Foreigners were only included in the survey provided they had sufficient knowledge of German. Although employed without fixed remuneration, unpaid family workers and persons with a maximum of three months' interruption from work were interviewed.

The fifth wave of the employment survey in 2006 (precursor of the BIBB/IAB survey) was carried out for the first time with computer-assisted telephone interviews.
