Unit 4.1 Exposure Scenarios

Unit 4.1 'Exposure Scenarios' focuses on sovereign duties which were transferred to division 4 on the basis of chemical policy regulations.

Therefore the focus is on preparation and processing of substance and product related dossiers under REACH- and Biocide regulations. In particular:

  • Description and assessment of workplace exposure
  • Proposal and evaluation of the effectiveness of engineering controls, organisational and individual protections measures
  • Labelling of hazardous substances and mixtures as a part of risk communication

The unit participates with national and international committees which are useful for fulfilling legal duties and responsibilities. For example:

  • Working groups of the German Committee on Hazardous Substances (AGS) for the development of technical rules for hazardous substances (TRGS)
  • Technical Meeting Biocides of the European Commission
  • OECD Task Force on Exposure Assessment
  • Partner Expert Groups of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) for the development of REACH guidance documents

Unit 4.1 closely cooperates in projects with other units of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) and with scientists of other institutes. These cooperation's as well as its own developments allow unit 4.1 to create the scientific and methodological basis required for fulfilling its sovereign duties. The main issues that are or were processed in projects are:

  • Model development and validation to improve exposure estimates
  • Compiling control guidance sheets for the Easy-to-use workplace control scheme for hazardous substances (EMKG) for

    • Biocidal products
    • Hazardous substances
  • Investigations into exposure estimates and risk management measures for biocidal products, e.g.:

    • Concentrates
    • Insecticides
