Demographic change and the rising of statutory retirement age confront companies and employees with new challenges. Work has to be designed in order to keep employees healthy, trained and motivated. Continuous development of skills is necessary to maintain productivity throughout working life. Work design which fosters learning is a key strategy for maintaining health and motivation.
The research project examines the work design in selected areas of the service economy. The focus is on those industries that are facing constant pressure to innovate and change. In service companies operational managers, e.g. team managers, are often the only person responsible for the design of work. The research project therefore examines the team managers expertise and attitude to work design and the company-specific conditions they are working in. In addition, the respective employees are asked about their perception of inspiring working conditions, health and motivation. In order to analyse the work processes of the teams involved objectively, task analysis are carried out. A subsequent follow-up survey allows an analysis of the expected causality.
