Human exposure to biocidal products: Measurement of inhalation and dermal exposure during the application of biocide foams
The development of new biocidal products such as combined disinfectant cleaners leads to a wide-spread use of foam applications of biocides for professional use which serve as an alternative to spray applications.
The producers of these biocides underline in their product information the user safety of the foam application. It is frequently stated that there is no aerosol formation of active substances and in contrast to the spray application there is no danger of inhalation of aerosols. A prior work on biocide foams on behalf of BAuA showed based on a few qualitative measurements that aerosols are released during the foam application of biocides. Although, the extent of aerosol release seems to be lower for the foam application than for the respective spray application of an identical product. There are extensive data from workplace exposure measurements for spray applications and also etablished exposure models for spray applications. However, there is no such data available for the inhalation and dermal exposure during the foam application of biocides.
Therefore the worker exposure during the foam application of biocides is assessed based on models for spray application in the authorization procedure of biocides. This implies the risk of overestimation of the exposure which might be disadvantageous for the applicant.
This project aims at generating a data set for the inhalation and dermal exposure during the foam application of biocides. Based on this data set it should be possible to evaluate the exposure quantitatively. The results can also be used for the development of exposure models. One part of the project is a comparative measurement of the aerosol release during foaming and spraying of biocides. In case of a correlation of the aerosol release for both methods it should be possible to estimate the inhalation exposure for the foam application based on possibly existing data for a spray application of the same product. The inhalation and dermal exposure during the foam application of biocides will be measured by personal monitoring of volunteers. The results will serve for the quantitative evaluation of dermal and inhalation exposure during the foam application of biocides.
