Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) (IARC report, 2006). Existing evaluations of the international literature deal particularly with the relationship between PAH exposure and lung cancer (Boffetta et al. 1997, Bosetti et al. 2007). Currently, a similar evaluation of the available evidence on the relationship between PAH and laryngeal cancer does not exist. Against this background situation, the preparation of a systematic review started in 2008 in cooperation between the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) and the officer for occupational health of Hessen.
