How will people work in the future? How are they preparing themselves? And what will the role of science and research be in shaping the working environment of tomorrow?
Questions like these were at the heart of the "Working Environment of the Future" in the Science Year 2018 an initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). Due to digitalisation, alternative working arrangements and the development of artificial intelligence, research and civil society are facing new challenges. The Science Year 2018 showed the impact of social and technical innovations on the working environments of tomorrow - and not only how these are changing everyday working life, but also setting new standards in the socio-political dialogue.
The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) was partaking in the Science Year 2018 with the project "Science Creates Healthy Work - Shaping human Working Environments of the Future". In four multimedia web documentations, the project shows the contribution made by science and research to shaping and securing people-friendly workplaces, both now and in the future.

The web documentation "Mit voller Kraft?" ("With full power?") investigates the question of why physical strain is still relevant today - and how science, politics and practice can continue to ensure healthy working conditions in the future.
The web documentation "Arbeitszeiten der Zukunft - flexibel um jeden Preis" ("Working times of the future - flexible at any cost?") describes how flexibility in terms of working hours and place of work can have consequences for the health of employees. It also presents working time regimes that are flexible and healthy at the same time.
The web documentation "Staub von morgen" ("Tommorow's dust") presents pictures from a scanning electron microscope to give a fascinating insight into the world of nanoparticle and illustrates, how innovative materials should be handled to provide safe working conditions
The web documentation "Kollege Roboter" ("The robotic colleague") highlights the opportunities and risks of human-robotic collaboration from the perspective of the occupational sciences.
All documentations use understandable texts, exciting images and short video sequences. Scientists provide insights into their occupational research and examples from practical applications demonstrate how this knowledge can improve employees' working situations.
