In the present project, a total of 16 Control Guidance Sheets for the application of biocides of the product types wood preservatives, insecticides and rodenticides have been created. Since biocidal products are intended to be hazardous, §16 of the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance (Gefahrstoffverordnung - GefStoffV) demands the 'proper use' of these products. The Control Guidance Sheets shortly and concisely describe the proper use with special regard to minimization of operator exposure to the best possible extend. In addition, they shall become an integral part of the certificate of authorisation for biocidal products, thus ensuring a standardized and harmonized communication of safety measures and hence an equal treatment of applicants.

The structure of the Control Guidance Sheets for biocidal products is based on the Control Guidance Sheets of the 'Easy-to-use workplace control scheme for hazardous substances' (EMKG). To avoid confusion between these two sets of Control Guidance Sheets, as well as to take account of the large number of different biocidal product types, 4-digit identification numbers preceded by 'BP' have been assigned to the Control Guidance Sheets for biocidal products (the Control Guidance Sheets of the EMKG have three-digit numbers without preceding letters). For each product type, at least one Control Guidance Sheet describing basic measures of occupational hygiene was created; these Control Guidance Sheets form the 1000 series. They are supplemented by Control Guidance Sheets of the 2000 series, each giving instructions for a particular application within a product type. Associated Control Guidance Sheets of the 1000 and 2000 series must be observed together to obtain a complete description of the proper use for a particular application.

The development of the Control Guidance Sheets was based on an extensive evaluation of relevant literature, legal regulations and technical rules. The draft versions have been published on the website of the BAuA and, in addition, were presented to various professionals and practitioners together with a request for comments. Subsequently, the draft versions have been revised based on the comments received. In this way, it was aimed to achieve a high usability in practice.
