Chemicals Law

The Chemicals Act regulates the handling of chemical substances.

The key principles of the testing, assessment, classification and labelling of chemicals are defined in the Chemicals Act (Chemikaliengesetz, ChemG), and are further specified by ordinances such as the Chemicals Costs Ordinance, the Chemicals Prohibition Ordinance and the Reporting Ordinance for Biocidal Products.

The basis for these national regulations is provided by a range of EU directives. An increasingly large part of the legislation on chemical substances is governed by EU regulations which apply directly and do not require implementation into national law.
