Safety on floors and stairs
Accidents and costs
Falls caused by slips and trips lead the statistics as the number one of all accidents.
Falling accidents account for 20% of all accidents.
Beside the implications for the persons concerned these accidents are connected with the costs of
- approx. 330 Mill. Euro insurance benefits
- + approx.8 billion Euro loss of production
per year in Germany.
A decrease in falling accidents means not only protecting health but also saving costs.
The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) works in the field of floor-safety in both research and regulation. In the range of research we develop new measurement methods for determining the slip resistance of floors. Therefore the BAuA maintains a well equipped research laboratory with the current measurement devices used in Europe for determining the slip resistance of floors and facilities for biomechanical analysis of human walking. The results of our research are transferred into regulation at the national as well as European level.
