Description:

In consequence of the high innovative potential, a broad diversity of different new nanomaterial is being handled by research institutions, start-up companies and small/medium sized businesses. During this project, BAuA in cooperation with an international consortium will develop a draft OSH Code of Practice for safe handling of nanomaterial in laboratories. The code will be evaluated in field surveys and will be supplemented by a corresponding training concept. The objective is to create a sound basis for consistent standards regarding safe handling of nanomaterial in laboratory scale based on the EU precautionary principle.

Project results:
Embedded into the EU FP7 project NanoValid, BAuA developed "Nano to go!" - a practically oriented guideline for safe handling of nanomaterials and other innovative materials at workplaces.

"Nano to go!" consists of several elements and contains a brochure, field studies, presentations and general documents to comprehensively support risk assessment and risk management.

Flyer / Brochure
The content of "Nano to go!" is described in a flyer. The brochure supports risk assessment and risk management when working with nanomaterials. It provides safety strategies and protection measures for handling nanomaterials bound in solid matrices, dissolved in liquids, in soluble or insoluble powder form, and for handling nanofibres. Additional recommendations are given for storage and disposal of nanomaterials, for protection from fire and explosion, for training and instruction courses, and for occupational health.

Field studies
The field studies depict examples of expert assessment of safety and health at different workplaces. They contain detailed descriptions of several exposure measurements at pilot plants and laboratories. The reports describe methods, sampling strategies and devices, summarise and discuss results, and combine measurements and non-measurement methods.
