Slip-resistance on stairs

Falls on staircases are often caused by inadequate slip-resistance, especially on step edges. At present, there are no special methods available to test the slip-resistance of staircase-steps and their front edges.

Based on the results of previous bio-mechanical studies, the critical phases of going downstairs and the derived test-parameters are discussed. Considering the different approaches, a method was chosen which takes into account most of the proposed parameters. The method was tested on 8 standard step edge designs and a procedure for the testing of the slip-resistance was proposed, which is in accordance with the standard draft DIN 51 131 for the determination of the slip-resistance of floors. The method provides the possibility to test the slip-resistance when the shoe meets the step at the most critical angle.
