Noise at the workplace and cardiovascular diseases

"Noise at the workplace and cardiovascular diseases" was the theme of a meeting of experts held at the Federal Institute for Occupational Medicine, Berlin, on November 16, 1995. The meeting should answer the questions to what extent occupational noise is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease, and if the current knowledge allows to derive recommendations for preventive medicine.

The lectures presented are printed here in the full version. The participants agreed that occupational noise is suspected to be a risk factor which contributes to the development of cardiovascular disorders. Indeed the precise quantitative significance of noise cannot be estimated with confidence. The essential methods of promising investigations were debated. It was proposed to record the most important cardiovascular risk factors during preventive medical examinations.
